Know Your Yogi: Jennie Pierce, Yoga Director for Summit Gyms!

Know Your Yogi: Jennie Pierce, Yoga Director for Summit Gyms!

With the retirement and subsequent move-to-Colorado of Barbara (our former Yoga Director), we had to bring in some fresh blood to lead our yoga program! And that’s no easy feat - you gotta be patient with all the climber types that run Summit, so we had to find the right person for the job. And we definitely did! Meet our current Yoga DirectorJennie - she’s sweet, she’s kind, but she also doesn’t take no sh#$ from anyone. She teaches class here at Summit, as well as heads our incredible Yoga Teacher Training program! She’s great at teaching yoga, and also amazing at teaching how to teach yoga! If you have not had a chance to talk to Jennie yet, you should! Here’s a bit more on Jennie, so you know that talking about 80s music is always a safe bet with her … ALWAYS!

(Unless you’re talking crap on 80s music then GTFO)

Guys! I'm officially a certified yoga teacher! It's kind of weird though, because multiple people have started asking me for personal stretching advice. Even weirder is when I start referencing body parts and Sanskrit words in regular conversation. But one of the coolest side effects of teacher training that I wasn't fully expecting is how much it deepened my own practice both on and off my mat. Yes, I'm still the same ridiculous and loud person I was before. But I feel like I have a deeper capacity to connect with myself and control how I feel about and react to things. It's pretty incredible to realize both the physical control you have over your body and the mental control you have over your mind. I'm pretty grateful to have had this opportunity to learn and grow as a yogi and as a human.

You don’t know what tired is until you’ve worked a full-time job during the week and done YTT on the weekends for a whole month. But I don't really miss laying around on Saturdays and being bored on Sundays. As tired and sore as I am, it's pretty rewarding to spend my time with a fantastic group of people who are all trying to better themselves. I've also learned that the human body is super neat. I never thought I would say that because biology freaked me out as a kid, but really it's pretty fascinating how much our bodies are capable of. After the first weekend, I thought that this was a cool experience. I was satisfied with my decision, even though I was still pretty intimidated. After the second weekend, my mentality was changing, and I knew that I had already gotten my money’s worth.

Our yoga teacher trainees are always a diverse group of people — all coming from different walks of life to pursue the same thing: a higher understanding of the practice of yoga, and the ability to share it. But, not everyone pursues this for the same reason (there is definitely no "right" or "wrong" reason!) — for some it's the culmination of years of interest in the practice, and for others, it can be a spur of the moment pursuit of passion. We encourage anyone with a true interest in deepening their relationship with yoga to take our Yoga Teacher Training class. Here's the story behind one of our current yoga teacher trainees, Stephanie, and what brought her to the class and what she hopes to get out of it. We'll get another update from Stephanie about halfway through the class, and then another at the end!
