24 Karat Gym - In Defense of the Gym Climber

It’s my experience that for some climbers, gym climbing lacks a sort of purity that every experienced rock-rat has an opinion on. The most common reason I hear is, “It’s not real climbing,” or “Gym climbing should only be a tool for training.” I understand the sentiment, and it isn’t without that sentiment that climbers can discuss what real or pure climbing is. Or, discuss what is or is not ethical, or best for the progression of the sport in the outdoors or at your local gym.

Routesetters - a shoutout to the folks who help make our gyms so great

Routesetters - a shoutout to the folks who help make our gyms so great

As the year comes to a close, we're left to reflect on our accomplishments of the past 365 days — miles driven, friends' birthdays Facebook had to remind you of, tinder dates never texted again — and for us climbers, routes climbed. For every route or problem you've climbed this year, there was a routesetter behind it — setting every hold, move, and tweaking every angle. It's actually a pretty insane amount of work - in 2017 alone, Summit routesetters set over 4,600 different routes and boulder problems.

20 reasons why climbing is better than any other sport ever - an oversimplification of our sport

20 reasons why climbing is better than any other sport ever - an oversimplification of our sport

Let's face it - we all know climbing is the best sport ever, forever and ever, amen. But - does the world know it? We're not sure that they do, but to help you guys remember to appreciate the little things in climbing, we have compiled a list of just what makes climbing so darn special and unique.

Yeah, Did You Just Make That Up? I Think Ya Did — 20 climbing terms and their potentially nonsense origins

Climbers have a very particular vocabulary. If any outsider were to eavesdrop on a conversation between climbers for even five minutes, they would leave very confused and probably disgusted. Our slang terms get slangier, and shortened, and misspelled until we're left with a language so exclusive, that I'm still learning new words all the time — and I have been in the climbing game for about 13 years now. I compiled a list of 20 of the most common climbing terms that y'all might be interested in hearing the origins of. Let me know if I missed any! GriGri: Believe it or not, the term "GriGri" is derived from Voodoo. Yep, spell castin', doll stabbin' Voodoo.  In Voodoo, a "gris gris" is a good luck talisman —  thanks to its auto-locking feature, I'd say the GriGri is a pretty good luck charm against your partner's crappy belaying. So be sure to make an animal sacrifice to the Petzl gods, in appreciation for them creating you such a glorious device.
