Dang, what a weekend! This Saturday was our annual 12 Hours of Summit Suffering, our favorite event of the year to host! This one was definitely an incredible one - we had 250 COMPETITORS climb from 9 am to 9 pm at all FIVE Summit locations! They climbed, they took classes, they dressed up, they CONQUERED. Here is a brief recap from the event - click through our photo gallery to see our brave competitors / staff throughout the event!
Seems like there is a podcast for everything these days. Comedy podcasts, parenting podcasts, mystery podcasts - there's a little something for everyone. Including CLIMBERS! If, like most of us, you live, sleep, eat, breath, and SWEAT climbing, it's a no brainer that you should give a climbing podcast a shot. Some have training tips, some gossip about the latest in climbing, some interview prominent climbers. We here at Summit have compiled a list of some of our favorite podcasts - read up, and check them out if they sound like your thing! The glorious thing about podcasts is that most are FREE, so there's no risk to just giving one a try!
A familiar face at Summit Denton became the gym's General Manager in May! Say hello to Ross Nelson! A fixture at the Denton gym since it opened in 2015, Ross has taken the helm at our cool little gym near the downtown Denton square. A recent UNT grad, Ross knows the ins and outs of this college town (and can feel the pain of any students going through finals / weird roommate situations). Here's a bit more on Ross!
Alright climbers! — these are are the top places around the world to travel to as a rock climber! All of these are outdoor climbs and there are many places you should travel to. In no particular order, here is a list of the top 7 of the off beaten path areas all around the world! We have rated them all based on price, on a scale from $ (not too pricey) to $$$$$ (very expensive).
The 12 Hours of Summit Suffering competition is coming around the corner! (If you don't know what that is, click on the link! Trust us ... it's awesome.) Not only is this a super fun comp, but every competitor has a chance to win something awesome during the huge raffle that happens after the comp! This competition would be nothing without its sponsors, so we wanted to use this post to give all of them a shout-out, plus let y'all know some of the goodies you can look forward to maybe snagging! The after-party this year will be at Summit Grapevine and will include food, beer, awards and the raffle prizes! Of course, we aren’t competing for the goods, but this is a climber's DREAM raffle! The prizes include ski lift tickets, bottles, chalk, chalk bags, ropes, LOTS of gift cards, clothes, clinics, climbing shoes, snacks, crag packs, brushes, coupons, even yoga gear!
The reason why the parking lot at Summit Carrollton is currently a little bit technicolor! For the Carrollton member party, we tie-dyed tee shirts, raced on a surprisingly tall slip n slide, chucked water balloons only at people who were not trying to get wet, drank beer, ate Steel City popsicles and snacked on food truck crepes! Check out photos from the night — come find yourself if you were there, or get jealoussssss if you weren't! This was one of our member parties- so if you're not a member yet, this is the kind of stuff we do to show our members that we appreciate them!
Did you go to Prom? This year's Pro was definitely a night to remember! Congrats to our crowned Prom King and Queen - y'all looked lovely. Thanks to everyone who came out, and especially those who were dressed to the nines. Some of y'all were looking real sharp - who would have thought climbers could clean up so good?
Happy Spring, y'all! We're celebrating the only way we know how, with a party and a comp! And this isn't just any party comp ... it's the Spring Open! This year, the weather is gonna be GREAT and we're taking the party to the streets ... or, at least, the parking lot of Summit Carrollton. We're gonna have a huge luau-themed block party out in the parking lot, with games, tacos, beer, Dallas Pets Alive! adoption van and a SCAVENGER HUNT. We'll also be hosting a gear swap - bring your old gear and either sell or swap it with other party goers! Sound awesome? Because it is!
Guys! I'm officially a certified yoga teacher! It's kind of weird though, because multiple people have started asking me for personal stretching advice. Even weirder is when I start referencing body parts and Sanskrit words in regular conversation. But one of the coolest side effects of teacher training that I wasn't fully expecting is how much it deepened my own practice both on and off my mat. Yes, I'm still the same ridiculous and loud person I was before. But I feel like I have a deeper capacity to connect with myself and control how I feel about and react to things. It's pretty incredible to realize both the physical control you have over your body and the mental control you have over your mind. I'm pretty grateful to have had this opportunity to learn and grow as a yogi and as a human.
Thanks to everyone who came out to our Into the Wild jungle-themed member party! Y'all had some crazy costumes - the costume contest was definitely a hard one to judge! One of the MANY perks of being a member at Summit is being able to come to events like these! We're hosting them all the time, just check out our events schedule!
Bouldering League starts next week! Just what is Bouldering League and why should you care?! Bouldering League is our way of bringing climbers of all different abilities together to compete against each other, push themselves, and hang out with folks they might not have otherwise met! It's easy to get in a rut while climbing - you come in on the same days, hang out with the same people, and only get on problems that are within your comfort zone. Well Bouldering League will snap you out of that funk, with the added promise of being really friggin' fun.
You don’t know what tired is until you’ve worked a full-time job during the week and done YTT on the weekends for a whole month. But I don't really miss laying around on Saturdays and being bored on Sundays. As tired and sore as I am, it's pretty rewarding to spend my time with a fantastic group of people who are all trying to better themselves. I've also learned that the human body is super neat. I never thought I would say that because biology freaked me out as a kid, but really it's pretty fascinating how much our bodies are capable of. After the first weekend, I thought that this was a cool experience. I was satisfied with my decision, even though I was still pretty intimidated. After the second weekend, my mentality was changing, and I knew that I had already gotten my money’s worth.
So Footloose was incredible ... y'all made it the best campus comp / 80s party EVER. Huge shout Texas Ale Project for throwing a bunch of beer our way! If you had a pale ale or a stout that night and really dug it, it's thanks to those guys! Another shout-out to Brass Tacks Barbershop for coming out and giving some great haircuts. Does anyone know if anyone ended up with a mullet?!! Anyways, results are here!
Our yoga teacher trainees are always a diverse group of people — all coming from different walks of life to pursue the same thing: a higher understanding of the practice of yoga, and the ability to share it. But, not everyone pursues this for the same reason (there is definitely no "right" or "wrong" reason!) — for some it's the culmination of years of interest in the practice, and for others, it can be a spur of the moment pursuit of passion. We encourage anyone with a true interest in deepening their relationship with yoga to take our Yoga Teacher Training class. Here's the story behind one of our current yoga teacher trainees, Stephanie, and what brought her to the class and what she hopes to get out of it. We'll get another update from Stephanie about halfway through the class, and then another at the end!
