Happy Spring, y'all! We're celebrating the only way we know how, with a party and a comp! And this isn't just any party comp ... it's the Spring Open! This year, the weather is gonna be GREAT and we're taking the party to the streets ... or, at least, the parking lot of Summit Carrollton. We're gonna have a huge luau-themed block party out in the parking lot, with games, tacos, beer, Dallas Pets Alive! adoption van and a SCAVENGER HUNT. We'll also be hosting a gear swap - bring your old gear and either sell or swap it with other party goers! Sound awesome? Because it is!
Guys! I'm officially a certified yoga teacher! It's kind of weird though, because multiple people have started asking me for personal stretching advice. Even weirder is when I start referencing body parts and Sanskrit words in regular conversation. But one of the coolest side effects of teacher training that I wasn't fully expecting is how much it deepened my own practice both on and off my mat. Yes, I'm still the same ridiculous and loud person I was before. But I feel like I have a deeper capacity to connect with myself and control how I feel about and react to things. It's pretty incredible to realize both the physical control you have over your body and the mental control you have over your mind. I'm pretty grateful to have had this opportunity to learn and grow as a yogi and as a human.
Thanks to everyone who came out to our Into the Wild jungle-themed member party! Y'all had some crazy costumes - the costume contest was definitely a hard one to judge! One of the MANY perks of being a member at Summit is being able to come to events like these! We're hosting them all the time, just check out our events schedule!
Bouldering League starts next week! Just what is Bouldering League and why should you care?! Bouldering League is our way of bringing climbers of all different abilities together to compete against each other, push themselves, and hang out with folks they might not have otherwise met! It's easy to get in a rut while climbing - you come in on the same days, hang out with the same people, and only get on problems that are within your comfort zone. Well Bouldering League will snap you out of that funk, with the added promise of being really friggin' fun.
You don’t know what tired is until you’ve worked a full-time job during the week and done YTT on the weekends for a whole month. But I don't really miss laying around on Saturdays and being bored on Sundays. As tired and sore as I am, it's pretty rewarding to spend my time with a fantastic group of people who are all trying to better themselves. I've also learned that the human body is super neat. I never thought I would say that because biology freaked me out as a kid, but really it's pretty fascinating how much our bodies are capable of. After the first weekend, I thought that this was a cool experience. I was satisfied with my decision, even though I was still pretty intimidated. After the second weekend, my mentality was changing, and I knew that I had already gotten my money’s worth.
So Footloose was incredible ... y'all made it the best campus comp / 80s party EVER. Huge shout Texas Ale Project for throwing a bunch of beer our way! If you had a pale ale or a stout that night and really dug it, it's thanks to those guys! Another shout-out to Brass Tacks Barbershop for coming out and giving some great haircuts. Does anyone know if anyone ended up with a mullet?!! Anyways, results are here!
Our yoga teacher trainees are always a diverse group of people — all coming from different walks of life to pursue the same thing: a higher understanding of the practice of yoga, and the ability to share it. But, not everyone pursues this for the same reason (there is definitely no "right" or "wrong" reason!) — for some it's the culmination of years of interest in the practice, and for others, it can be a spur of the moment pursuit of passion. We encourage anyone with a true interest in deepening their relationship with yoga to take our Yoga Teacher Training class. Here's the story behind one of our current yoga teacher trainees, Stephanie, and what brought her to the class and what she hopes to get out of it. We'll get another update from Stephanie about halfway through the class, and then another at the end!
Say hello to Tucker! He is a routesetter here at Summit, as well as the crew boss for the routesetting crew responsible for keeping Grapevine, Denton, and now Fort Worth, full of fresh and cool sets! Tucker first came to us from Dyno Rock, a climbing gym in Arlington, and we are so happy to have him! His unique setting style is so fun to climb on, and will always make you think. Tucker is famed for his legendary flexibility - so his setting will usually have many options for high crazy feet if you're bold enough to use them! (Probably a good time to plug Summit Yoga! Come stretch with us and get more flexible and GET ON TUCKER'S LEVEL.) So here's a little more about Tucker, our strong AF vegetarian routesetter!
We were very psyched to have hosted the last SBS of the 2017 season at Summit Fort Worth last Friday! It was Fort Worth's first time to see climbers, and it was awesome to see. We went through a LOT of beer - thanks to Shannon Brewing Company for their beer donation! Here are some pics and results from the night - there will be a short video coming soon, and we hope y'all who were not in attendance were able to watch the live stream.
Hey! Hey you casual climber! Are you ready to take the next step, to turn climbing from just a hobby to a way to make a living? Well step off the couch and into the spotlight! Just follow these 11 steps and you'll be the next Sierra Blair-Coyle (minus the whole sending V10 thing.) Cuz we all know it's not about how hard you climb ... but how good you look doing it.
It's amazing what some send temps can do. Claire Buhrfeind, former member of Summit's resident youth competitive climbing team, just had a heck of a trip to the Red River Gorge. She sent two 14cs and a 14a within two days of each other. Her very first send was Lucifer, a 14c. Considering that her previous hardest send was 13d, making the jump all the way to 14c was ... let's just say ... CRAY. It's like running a marathon before even registering for a 10k. Except more impressive. I managed to snag a moment with Claire towards the end of her trip to talk to her about her sends. Way to rep Texas, Claire!

Hello! And welcome to the latest edition of MEET YOUR ROUTESETTER! Today we've got a brief Q&A with Summit routesetter Brian Seale. Brian is the crew boss for one of our two routesetting crews - his crew sets at Dallas and Carrollton, as well as any gym that has an upcoming competition. Brian is a bit of a nerd (in the best way possible) as well as a dad joke aficionado (worst way possible). If you went to our latest SBS competition, he was one of the Lieutenant Dangles walking around. Yes, there were two Lieutenant Dangles that night ... Anyways - here's more about Brian:
