As tempting as it is to spend EVERY DAY at the gym (I mean, we basically we have everything you could ever need here — climbing, cool people, food, drinks and a bathroom), it's really important to take some time off of climbing, to recharge and prepare yourself for your next sesh. While just taking a day or two off from climbing is beneficial, here are some other things you can do on an off day to get the most out of your rest!

Since current GM Alex Francis is moving to Colorado soon, we had Scott step in at the helm of Dallas! He has been around the gyms for awhile, so you Grapevine folks might recognize him! He's quite the party thrower and a really nice guy, so here is more about Scott!
It's here again! The time is nearing for our second annual 12 Hours of Summit Suffering competition! The comp is August 27th, and you'll have from 9 am to 9 pm to climb as many routes as you can, at three of our locations! (Dallas, Carrollton, and Grapevine.) We modeled this competition off of the infamous 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell competition. We're making this year's bigger than last year's — more food, more beer, more raffles — we're even increasing the number of competitors! This year we are adding more ways to earn point bonuses - like taking a yoga and an abs class will give you a massive boost!
Climbing gyms are for climbing, obviously, but they're also for so much more! If you come to a climbing gym and look around, what approximately is the percent of people actually on the wall? You will see some climbing, yeah, but you'll also see many other shenanigans afoot. This blog post is in ode to all the random crap we do when we're not crushing like the glorious beasts that we are!
1. The climbing gym is your oyster, but damn sometimes you get tired of seafood
Working in a climbing gym seems super awesome because you get to work at a place you LOVE, but sometimes it takes some of the magic out of climbing. We're always looking forward to getting a climbing sesh in after our shift — but sometimes after eight hours of orientations and birthday parties, even the thought of staying another five minutes sends us into fits of PTSD. Luckily after a closing shift, we can have the whole gym to ourselves!
We are very excited to announce that Bryan Prater is now the General Manager of our Carrollton gym! Bryan has been a long-time member and employee, and if you don't already know him and love him, then prepare for him to be your new favorite. Because he is one of the funniest, nicest guys. Next time you see him in the gym, definitely ask him about some of his epic stories — not all of which I could fit in this post, and the ones that I do mention, some of the magic is lost in my retelling.
Scarpa recently revamped a classic, and gave a *little* more sex appeal to the Helix, their all-day comfort shoe. I dunno about any of y'all, but I won't miss the former Helix's distinctive stripes. The new Helix, with its monochromatic styling, is a little bit easier on the eyes — if you're a dude who's into yellow laces or a lady who will absolutely rock orange on her feet.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our first-ever Summit Spring Open last Saturday and made it a total blast! We're continuously impressed by how strong, and totally awesome all of y'all can be! All in all, the competition lasted nearly seven hours, we cleaned out a food truck and totally emptied THREE WHOLE KEGS. We even hosted our first ever Beastmaker hangboard competition, and gave out around $1,100 total in prizes to our top competitors!
We're getting closer to competition time on Saturday — how are you igniting your competitive spirit? Are you a natural-born competitor, who can immediately hone their focus to a razor edge, or do you need a little bit of inspiration to ignite the fire within? Regardless of whether you win or lose (or even how you play the game), here are some tips to up your competition game, whether you've been competing forever, or this is your first time.
QUESTION: How many guys do you know that have a yellow mohawk? ANSWER: NOT ENOUGH. Phil rocks the yellow 'hawk and he does it well, and somehow maintains its perfect spike while routesetting all-day. And he's a darn good routesetter too, setting a lot of problems with tough cruxes that make you think — but once you figure them out you're like, "Oh duh!" So here's some more info on the man behind the "PS" initials!
Not every gear post can be about the latest and greatest shiny new climbing object that may or may not give you that extra boost to climb harder, faster, lighter, stronger, or dumber. Sometimes you have to realize that some shoes have stuck around the product line for awhile for a reason. So today we visit the Instinct S from Scarpa, with the same last as the now famous Instinct VS, but with a slightly more sensitive feel, and a noticeable lack of a velcro strap — which was intentional because the "S" in "VS" stands for slipper and adding a velcro strap would ruin that line of thought (they may have had other reasons).
